According to Infosecurity Magazine, researchers at Koi Security discovered serious vulnerabilities in three of Anthropic’s official Claude Desktop extensions. The security flaws affected the Chrome, iMessage and Apple Notes connectors that were reported through Anthropic’s HackerOne program on July 3. These extensions, which are packaged Model Context Protocol servers available from Anthropic’s marketplace, received a high severity rating of CVSS 8.9. The vulnerabilities involve unsanitized command injection that could enable remote code execution on user machines. Attackers could potentially collect sensitive information like SSH keys, AWS credentials, and browser passwords by crafting malicious content that Claude Desktop would access and execute.
Why this matters
Here’s the thing about these extensions – they’re not like your typical browser plugins. Chrome extensions run in sandboxed environments, but Claude Desktop extensions operate with full system permissions. That means they can read any file, execute commands, access credentials, and modify system settings.
