Electric Vehicle Adoption Accelerates in Guernsey
Guernsey’s electric vehicle fleet has expanded dramatically, with nearly 3,000 EVs now registered on the island, according to reports from the Committee for Environment and Infrastructure. The president of the committee, Deputy Adrian Gabriel, revealed the current figure stands at 2,844 electric vehicles, representing substantial growth from just 758 registered in 2020.

Registration Breakdown and Market Trends
The total electric vehicle count comprises 1,954 cars, with nearly equal numbers of new (1,022) and used (932) models, sources indicate. Additionally, the island has registered 242 electric motorcycles and 648 light commercial vans. Market analysis suggests electric vehicles accounted for 15% of new registrations in 2024, though the rate has reportedly moderated to approximately 10-11% so far in 2025.
Taxation Policy Under Review
The surge in electric vehicle adoption has prompted discussions about future taxation models, according to committee statements. Deputy Jayne Ozanne reportedly suggested that introducing annual fees for electric vehicles could offset proposed reductions in fuel duty rates. Deputy Gabriel confirmed he is collaborating with the Policy & Resources committee to redesign vehicle taxation systems to address the changing transportation landscape.
Charging Infrastructure Expansion Planned
Under questioning from Deputy John Gollop, Gabriel indicated that infrastructure development remains a priority for the committee. “One of the work streams at traffic and highways is to investigate public charging points because some people do want to take advantage of the efficiencies of electric vehicle driving but don’t have off-street parking,” he stated, according to reports. The exact locations and implementation methods for public charging stations reportedly remain under consideration.
Sustainable Transportation Future
The rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption reflects Guernsey’s shifting transportation preferences, analysts suggest. With nearly fourfold growth in registered electric vehicles since 2020, the island appears to be embracing cleaner transportation technologies. The concurrent discussions about taxation reform and charging infrastructure development suggest officials are working to accommodate this transition while maintaining sustainable funding mechanisms for transportation systems.
