The Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) unit, along with teams focused on product-related AI and AI infrastructure, will see position eliminations. However, the newly formed TBD Lab, described as comprising “a few dozen” researchers and engineers working on Meta’s next-generation foundation models, will remain untouched by the cuts.

According to reports from Axios, which first broke the story citing internal company communications, Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang explained that reducing team size would streamline decision-making processes. The move is reportedly designed to increase the responsibility, scope, and impact of each remaining role within the organization.

The workforce reduction comes amid significant financial and organizational developments at the social media giant. Just one day prior to announcing the AI unit restructuring, Meta reportedly secured a $27 billion financing agreement with Blue Owl Capital, described as the company’s largest-ever private capital arrangement. According to the analysis, this substantial funding is intended to support Meta’s massive data center project, which forms the foundation of its AI ambitions.

Industry observers suggest the financing deal enables Meta to pursue its aggressive AI goals while transferring much of the upfront cost and risk to external capital.
